Catching Up

So it has been a while since I have posted anything on here, but I am back.

The past few days have shown how our constitution still works in modern times. When President Obama announced his change in command for the war in Afghanistan, he not only did the right thing, but he showed the world that our respect for civilian control of the military is still live today. I also see this change as good for the war effort as a whole. The war is beginning to show signs of imporovement, but very slow ones, and I think that it was time for a change in command, escpecially when that new commander helped to turn the situation in Iraq around.

However, the situation in Iraq was much different. When General David Petreaus was in command in Iraq, he had a president that would do whatever he had to do to give limitless funding to the war effort, and a president who also gave a pretty much open ended committment to the war. Also, the "turnaround" in Iraq was much contributed to the "Sunni Awakening," which allowed the forces to be more welcome by the civilians. In Afghanistan, the people are beginning to show signs of support for the coalition forces there, but the current president is not willing to endlessly fund this war, nor is he offering an open ended committment to the Afghani government.

As I see it, Afghanistan is a problem with no solution. Well, I take that back, there is a way to solve this for America. WITHDRAW the troops from the country, and let them work it out on their own. Our stated goal in Afghanistan is to get rid of al Queada, but al Queada is no longer there. We either need a new, well defined mission in Afghanistan, or we need not be there at all. I sincerely hope that President Obama recognizes this soon, for the good of his political career, for the good of the country, and most of all, for the good of the lives of the many brave men and women on the ground in Afghanistan.
