Welcome to the Show!

Hello and welcome to the Left Wing Liberal Show, I am your host, Daniel O'Donnell. Were to begin, oh were to begin. The past couple years have been a liberal democrat’s DREAM! Beginning in 2006, when the Republican majority fell – with a thud – to a democratic majority, the gears of this nation began moving again. Then, two years later, the people of this great nation made another jump to the left, they not only expanded the democratic majority in both houses of congress, they also elected a Democrat to the White House. This was a momentous occasion for everyone. I worked on President Barack Obama’s campaign for change in my home town in Indiana, a very red home town.

Now that we have put Democrats back into power, we have the tools we need to fix our country, and oh the problems we face. An ailing economy, a crumbling infrastructure, a non-working healthcare system, and two wars (one unneeded, and another that needs much more attention).

At the top of our to do list, fixing the economy. President Obama’s economic stimulus plan is our best hope for the future, and like him, I would love to see it done in a bipartisan manner, but, as usual, the Republicans do not want to play game. Congressional Republicans complained that there was not enough tax cuts in the bill, that there is too much spending, that it will increase the national debt and the deficit. Yes, I will agree that this spending will add more to the national debt, but there is something they don’t understand, as we put this money out there, it will com back to us, with interest. With this “profit” we can begin to pay off our national debt. In respect to the deficit, the addition will only be a short term thing, President Obama is going to make changes to the budget, cut programs that no longer work, and to the ones that do work, make them cost less, which will more than balance the deficit in the long run.

Tax cuts. I have one thing to say about tax cuts – no way, no how, no tax cuts! – economists, both conservative and liberal, will tell you that if you want to stimulate an economy, you do not use tax cuts. Tax cuts are way too variable to be reliable. If taxpayers receive tax cuts there is no guarantee that they will make their way back into the economy. However, in his bipartisan mission, Obama caved and took what was a perfect bill and removed some direct spending and replaced it with tax cuts. Essentially he took a great bill that would have passed and turned it into an okay bill that may pass.

After making these concessions to congressional Republicans, how did they repay him? They voted, every single one of them in the House, against the bill. All 177 voting Republicans said no to the bill, although it still passed, it was a huge slap in the face to the new administration, that through his tireless efforts to reach out his hand in the spirit of bipartisanship, through his countless concessions to the Republicans, they still want to play by the old, worn out, bitter partisan playbook that has ruled Washington too long. This only makes the Republicans look worse than they already do with the scars of the last eight years.

I have one plea to President Obama. I know that you really want to make a change in Washington, but now is not the time to make drastic changes, not with so many people out of work and so many people facing foreclosure. We know that we can pass this bill without the Republicans, there will be time to “bind the nations wounds” after we fix this massive problem.
To the Republicans I say, if we wanted your input on an economy that you broke, we would not have given historic gains to the Democrats on November 4, 2008. If we wanted your old, worn out games we would not have exiled you to the minority. And last, if we wanted your ideas, we would still have a SENATOR Barack Obama.

Thank you, God bless you and God bless the United States of America.
